Integrated Ph.D. Programme JNCASR invites applications for admission to the Integrated (Int.) Ph.D. programme in Materials Science, Chemical Science and Biological Science. The Integrated Ph.D  programme in Biological Science will be independently offered in the disciplines of  'Evolutionary and
Organismal Biology' and, 'Molecular Biology and Genetics'.

Eligibility criteria for Int. Ph.D Programme
Materials Science: Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science. Those with Bachelor's degree in Engineering with an aptitude towards scientific research will also be considered. Candidates are expected to have sound knowledge in the fundamentals of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Chemical Science: Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science with Chemistry as a major.
Biological Science: a) Evolutionary and Organismal Biology: Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics. Those with Bachelor's degree in Engineering with an aptitude towards scientific research will also be consi dered. b) Molecular Biology and Genetics: Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science.
For all the above Int. Ph.D programmes, candidates should have a minimum of 55% marks at the Bachelor's level. Candidates who are appearing for the final examination this year can also apply.

PROJECT ORIENTED CHEMICAL EDUCATION (POCE)
PROJECT ORIENTED BIOLOGICAL EDUCATION (POBE)These programmes, conducted in summer for 6-8 weeks (~ mid May to July), are aimed at infusing creativity and scientific temper into undergraduates, and involve lectures, laboratory projects and research work. Selected students are expected to work at the Centre for three consecutive summers, and will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 6000 per month during their period of stay at the Centre. Upon successful completion of the
programme, the students will receive a Diploma in Chemistry or Biology from the Centre. Those who complete the POCE/POBE programme with outstanding performance will be eligible for admission to the MS-PhD
programme in the Centre subject to satisfactory performance in the interview.

Post–graduate Diploma in Science Education: 2011

In order to provide opportunities to teachers and others to obtain training and for carrying out science education projects, this Centre is offering a post graduate diploma programme in science education. Some of the aspects covered in the proposed programme would be courses related to subject content, laboratory experiments, research experience and experience in education technology.

The training will be provided through projects and few formal courses. The programme will be for one year (for full-time students), at the end of which they will be given a post-graduate diploma in science education. The programme will take two years for teachers in service who do this on a part-time basis. Applications are invited from teachers with B.Sc/M.Sc with or without B.Ed qualification as well as from individuals who have B.Sc/M.Sc qualification interested in science education.

JNCASR Bangalore Summer Research Fellowships 2011

SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS – 2011

Intro
The Centre offers summer fellowships for two months to bright undergraduate and MSc students (renewable for a second year for selected students). This programme has proved to be popular and competitive; each year, about 5000 students from all over India apply for the 120 fellowships awarded. Fifty fellowships are supported by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, fifteen by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, New Delhi, and the rest by the Centre.

Students are placed with research groups at the Centre or with scientists else where in India. They are paid travel expenses and a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000. Selected students get the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research, and several summer projects have led to publications in leading journals. A random sample of projects pursued in past years is: Preparation of La0.5Sr0.5Co03 by Sol-Gel spin coating method; Study of correlated response to selection on faster development and early reproduction in Drosophila melanogaster; A study of the chaotic nature of flow in the neighborhood of vortices; Statistical analysis of fatal mining accidents in eight companies of Coal India Ltd. Many of the summer students of past years have gone on to pursue graduate studies and a research career, at the JNCASR or at another leading university.

Research Areas
Life Sciences: Infectious and non-infectious diseases, bioinformatics, developmental biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, life-history evolution, immunology, circadian biology, animal behaviour, behavioural ecology, evolutionary genetics, experimental evolution, chronobiology, behavior.

Material Sciences: Including Nano Sciences, energy and green materials.

Chemical Sciences: Solid state chemistry, theoretical/computational chemistry, inorganic, physical, organic chemistry.

Physical Sciences:Condensed matter theory and experiment, statistical physics, semiconductor materials physics, biophysics, nano physics, polymer physics, organic electronics, computational material science, soft matter.

Engineering Sciences:Theoretical and computational fluid dynamics, flow of complex fluids, granular media, experimental fluid mechanics, thermal science, chemical engineering and physical metallurgy, non-linear dynamics including planetary dynamics.

Mathematics: Fundamental Groups, Simplicial Homology and Triangulations.

Atmospheric Sciences:Atmospheric boundary layer, near-surface environment, radiation, solar-terrestrial relations, monsoon dynamics, modelling.

Eligibility for applying:
Academic requirements: * Students who have secured not less than 80% (science and maths subjects only) in their 10th , 12th(10 +2) and not less than first class in graduation and post graduation(if applicable).

Only students presently studying in I and II year of B.Sc., I, II and III year of B.E / B.Tech. / B.V.Sc./ MBBS / B.Pharm., I year of M.Sc. and I - IV year of Integrated M.Sc with the above mentioned academic requirements should apply.

Stipend
The students selected under this programme are placed with scientists at the Centre or elsewhere in India, for 2 months with a stipend of Rs. 6000 /- p.m and travel support as per Govt. of India norms.

VISITING FELLOWSHIPS: 2010–2011

To foster collaborations with the Centre’s faculty and to provide research opportunities, the Centre offers Visiting Fellowships to research scientists working in educational institutions and R and D laboratories in India.
Visiting fellows are associated with faculty and honorary faculty of the Centre, and the research work is carried out in the host institution in the broad areas of Life Sciences (including molecular and developmental biology, chronobiology, genetics, ecology, behaviour);Materials Sciences (including nanoscience); Chemical Sciences (including solid-state chemistry, theoretical/computational chemistry, and inorganic, physical and organic chemistry); Physical Sciences (including experimental and theoretical condensed-matter and materials physics, statistical physics, organic electronics and experimental nano biotechnology); Engineering Sciences (including fluid dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, and thermal and chemical engineering) and Atmospheric Sciences.

The fellowship is tenable for 3 months and the total period of stay in the Centre should be no less than 60 days. The fellowship carries an honorarium of Rs 25,000 per month.

The timing of the visit may be decided according to mutual convenience. Research scientists/engineers (preferably with a Ph.D.), who have permanent positions in educational institutions, R&D laboratories, etc. are invited to apply. Individuals who have utilized this Visiting Fellowship Programme earlier need not apply.

What is this all about?
Molecular Biology and Genetics Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore invites applications for faculty positions in the field biological sciences. Recruitment of Research Associate/Post-Doctoral Fellow under Department of Biotechnology, Government of India project titled ‘Cellular interaction of nanoparticles: effect on epigenetic and thereby its role in gene expression: implications from drug delivery to diagnosis’.

Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate/Post-Doctoral Fellow to work in the area of Chemical Biology/Nanobiotechnology, linking gene expression in human and diseases.

Qualification: Ph.D. with Organic Chemistry specialization.

All summer students should inform the JNCASR well in advance about the exact duration of their visit. The Fellowships section will then request the appropriate authority for accommodation, and let the Fellow know where he/she will be staying.
In special cases where a student needs to visit the Centre for a period in addition to that covered by the Fellowship, the guide may send in a request to this effect. The Centre will try to make their stay possible and fruitful. It is important that such students should inform the Fellowships section about the exact dates of their stay well in advance. Only students who receive an e-mail confirmation of accommodation being reserved for them can expect to be housed by the Centre. The student should carry money required for security deposit.
