Informatics today plays a crucial role in research and clinical practice, in areas ranging from the use of bioinformatics to understand human genetics to the role of health informatics in maintaining patient information. This attains more importance as there has been an avalanche of information which has made it essential to share, analyze and retrieve data.
This workshop
will be the first step to manage and exploit the resources as well as use the various software tools available on the web. The basics of information retrieval, medical databases and data mining tools will be covered. This workshop based on the CME format is aimed at medical students and graduates who are desirous of practicing informatics in their clinical work.
The workshop is being organized by the Bio-medical Informatics Centre, Department of Biophysics, AIIMS and is fully supported by ICMR.
There is no course fee. The selected students will, however, have to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. A maximum of 30 participants will be taken for the hands-on, however, the lectures will be open to all, though prior intimation is required.

1. Project Manager (1 Post): Salary Rs.50, 000/- p.m (Consolidated). Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (18 July 1853 – 4 February 1928)
A Dutch physicist who shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman for the discovery and theoretical explanation of the Zeeman Effect. He also derived the transformation equations subsequently used by Albert Einstein to describe space and time.
Pieter Zeeman ( (25 May 1865 – 9 October 1943)
A Dutch physicist who shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Hendrik Lorentz for his discovery of the Zeeman Effect.
Chemistry
Hermann Emil Fischer (9 October 1852 - 15 July 1919)
A German chemist and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1902. He is known for inventing the Fischer esterification.
Medicine or Physciology
Sir Ronald Ross KCB (13 May 1857 – 16 September 1932)
A Scottish physician born in Almora, India. He was the eldest son of General Sir Campbell Claye Grant Ross of the Indian Army. Ross studied malaria between 1881 and 1899. He worked on malaria in Calcutta at the Presidency General Hospital where he was ably assisted by Kishori Mohan Bandyopadhyay, a Bengali Indian scientist. In 1902 he was awarded noble prize for his work on Malaria disease.

Charles Kuen (Born 4 November 1933) who is widely regarded as the "Father of Fiber Optic Communications", was awarded half of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for "groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication".
Willard Sterling Boyle (born August 19, 1924)is a Canadian physicist and co-inventor of the charge-coupled device.

George Elwood Smith (born May 10, 1930) is an American scientist, applied physicist, and co-inventor of the charge-coupled device.
On October 6, they were awarded a one-quarter share each in the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for "the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit—the CCD sensor".

Thomas Arthur Steitz (born August 23, 1940) is a Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA
Ada E. Yonath (born 1939) is an Israeli crystallographer best known for her pioneering work on the structure of the ribosome. She is the current director of the Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Center for Biomolecular Structure and Assembly of the Weizmann Institute of Science. She become the first Israeli woman to win the Nobel Prize out of nine Israeli Nobel laureates, and the first woman in 45 years to win the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

Jack William Szostak (born November 9, 1952) is a biologist and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Alexander Rich Distinguished Investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.
All three share the 2009 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for “the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres”. Apart from this achievement Elizabeth Blackburn Co-discovered telomerase enzyme (responsible for replicating telomere) with Carolyn Widney who worked under her in 1984.

A German physicist, who,produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range today known as x-rays or Röntgen rays, an achievement that earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
Chemistry
Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff (30 August 1852 – 1 March 1911)
A Dutch physical and organic chemist and the winner of the first Nobel Prize in 1901 for chemistry. His research on chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium, osmotic pressure and stereochemistry are among his most notable achievements. Through these achievements, Van 't Hoff helped found the discipline of physical chemistry as it is known today.

Emil von Behring (15 March 1854 – 31 March 1917)
Behring was the discoverer of diphtheria antitoxin and attained a great reputation by that means and by his contributions to the study of immunity. KVPY for Engineering/Medical Students
About KVPY
The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a program started during 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research.
This program strives to assist the students to realises their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is developed for research and growth in the country. Generous scholarship and contingency grant is provided (up to the Pre-Ph.D. level) to the selected students.
In addition, summer programs for the KVPY Fellows are organised in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.
The KVPY is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The program is administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc, Bangalore), through the overall control of the Chief Executive (SID). The selection of students from those who are studying +1, +2, any U.G. Program including First/Second year Engineering/Medicine are carried out by IISc (Bangalore), IIT-Bombay (Mumbai), and ICMR (New Delhi), respectively, in association with two Zonal Centres one at Kolkata (Indian Institute of Science Education Research, Kolkata) and another at Mumbai (HBCSE, TIFR). There are special groups or committees set up at IISc, IIT and ICMR which screen the applications, conduct interviews at various centres, make the final selection and attend to follow-up matters.
Objective & Hope of KVPY
KVPY hopes that the award of this Fellowship to student is an encouragement and opportunities that they derive from it will expose them to research in the subject of their liking and induce them to choose a research career in science. This would really be a fulfillment of the main objective of the KVPY program.

Stream SP (Engineering): Students joining First / Second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch during the academic year 2009 - 2010 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in X and XII Standard Board Examinations. Students joining Second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch must have passed with a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) in the First year exam of B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. A hard copy of the Science/Engineering based research project is required along with the application.
Note for Students applying for SP Engineering Stream
KVPY application requires the report of a project, chosen and executed by the applicant and supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field, to be submitted along with the application. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted at IIT, Bombay during the month of December 2009 or January 2010. Application without the project report will not be considered.
The project should not be a routine one (such as measuring well known property of materials etc.). Applicant's creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. The supervising teacher/professional is required to provide a recommendation letter on the form (supplied along with the application form) certifying the extent of the applicant's original contribution to the project.
Stream SP (Medicine)
Students joining First / Second Professional year of M.B.B.S. program during the academic year 2009 - 2010. Students must have passed XII Standard Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Science subjects or passed First Professional MBBS exam with not less than 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks. A Copy of the Bio – Medical research project is required along with the application.
Note for Students applying for Medicine Stream SP (Medicine)
KVPY application requires the report of a project, chosen and executed by the applicant and supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field, to be submitted along with the application. The projects done jointly with other candidates are not considered for KVPY Fellowship award. Applicant’s creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. This project has to be supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted either at IISc, Bangalore or IIT-Bombay, Mumbai or ICMR, New Delhi during the month of December 2009 or January 2010.
Please Note that applications without the project report will not be considered. Privileges for KVPY Fellows
Summer program is an important part of the nurture program for KVPY Fellow. These are meant to expose the Fellows to methods of scientific research and inculcate in them an abiding interest in doing scientific research. These are normally organised during the summer vacation, when KVPY Fellows spend one or two weeks in scientific institutions listening to lectures by experts in different fields of science, engineering or medicine, seems things in a research environment, watching scientists at work/science in action, interacting with scientists, visiting nearby scientific research laboratories and institutions, and exchanging views with other research students. The Summer Program for KVPY Fellows in the Basic Science Stream is arranged either at Bangalore or Kolkata or Allahabad or Mumbai for One / Two weeks.
Other Privileges
An Identity Card is issued to each KVPY Fellows. Several national laboratories, universities and other institutions have agreed to extend special privileges like library, laboratory facilities to KVPY Fellows on production of the ID card.
Continuation of fellowship
Annual renewal of fellowships will depend on maintaining good academic performance first class/60% in aggregate marks in the chosen stream and satisfactory performance in summer programs.
Request for Application Form
a. Each Stream has its own application form. Students who wish to apply for more than one Stream should submit separate applications.
b. Applicants may apply either by Hard copy or Online.
c. Application forms may be down loaded from the KVPY website. Those who are unable to do so, may request for a Hard Copy.
d. Hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request by sending a processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) by means of remitting Rs. 200 (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) “to any core banking branches of STATE BANK OF INDIA, payable at all branches in India. Paid into the credit of Administrative Executive, KVPY A/c. No. 10270577392” and send the “pay-in-slip” along with the request, clearly indicating the stream (i.e.SA, SB, SP etc.) on the envelope
e. The SC/ST – candidates should provide a copy of the caste certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed proforma.
f. The completed application form along with the
1. Caste certificate in the case of SC/ST candidate
2. Project report in the case of SP/Basic Sciences/ Engineering/ Medicine
3. copy of the marks statement of the qualifying examination(s), in the case of SP (Engineering), SP(Medicine).
4. The original copy of the challan of processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST)

The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a program started during 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research.
This program strives to assist the students to realises their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is developed for research and growth in the country. Generous scholarship and contingency grant is provided (up to the Pre-Ph.D. level) to the selected students.
In addition, summer programs for the KVPY Fellows are organised in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.
The KVPY is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The program is administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc, Bangalore), through the overall control of the Chief Executive (SID). The selection of students from those who are studying +1, +2, any U.G. Program including First/Second year Engineering/Medicine are carried out by IISc (Bangalore), IIT-Bombay (Mumbai), and ICMR (New Delhi), respectively, in association with two Zonal Centres one at Kolkata (Indian Institute of Science Education Research, Kolkata) and another at Mumbai (HBCSE, TIFR). There are special groups or committees set up at IISc, IIT and ICMR which screen the applications, conduct interviews at various centres, make the final selection and attend to follow-up matters.
Objective & Hope of KVPY
KVPY hopes that the award of this Fellowship to student is an encouragement and opportunities that they derive from it will expose them to research in the subject of their liking and induce them to choose a research career in science. This would really be a fulfillment of the main objective of the KVPY program.

SP(Engineering)
Stream SP (Engineering): Students joining First / Second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch during the academic year 2009 - 2010 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in X and XII Standard Board Examinations. Students joining Second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch must have passed with a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) in the First year exam of B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. A hard copy of the Science/Engineering based research project is required along with the application.
Note for Students applying for SP Engineering Stream
KVPY application requires the report of a project, chosen and executed by the applicant and supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field, to be submitted along with the application. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted at IIT, Bombay during the month of December 2009 or January 2010. Application without the project report will not be considered.
The project should not be a routine one (such as measuring well known property of materials etc.). Applicant's creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. The supervising teacher/professional is required to provide a recommendation letter on the form (supplied along with the application form) certifying the extent of the applicant's original contribution to the project.
Stream SP (Medicine)
Students joining First / Second Professional year of M.B.B.S. program during the academic year 2009 - 2010. Students must have passed XII Standard Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Science subjects or passed First Professional MBBS exam with not less than 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks. A Copy of the Bio – Medical research project is required along with the application.
Note for Students applying for Medicine Stream SP (Medicine)
KVPY application requires the report of a project, chosen and executed by the applicant and supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field, to be submitted along with the application. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted at ICMR, New Delhi. Application without the Bio-Medical project report will not be considered.
The project should not be a routine one (such as measuring well known property of materials etc.). Applicant's creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. The supervising teacher/professional is required to provide two recommendation letters on the form (supplied along with the application form) certifying the extent of the applicant's original contribution to the project.
SP (Engineering) and SP (Medicine)
KVPY applicant is required to submit the project report, chosen and executed by the candidate exclusively for this application. The projects done jointly with other candidates are not considered for KVPY Fellowship award. Applicant’s creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. This project has to be supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted either at IISc, Bangalore or IIT-Bombay, Mumbai or ICMR, New Delhi during the month of December 2009 or January 2010.

Summer program is an important part of the nurture program for KVPY Fellow. These are meant to expose the Fellows to methods of scientific research and inculcate in them an abiding interest in doing scientific research. These are normally organised during the summer vacation, when KVPY Fellows spend one or two weeks in scientific institutions listening to lectures by experts in different fields of science, engineering or medicine, seems things in a research environment, watching scientists at work/science in action, interacting with scientists, visiting nearby scientific research laboratories and institutions, and exchanging views with other research students.
