Bio Fluid Mechanics
March 04-09, 2011
(Sponsored by Quality Improvement Program)
(Coordinator: A. K. Saha, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur)
Bio-fluid mechanics is the subject that studies a certain class of biological problems from a fluid mechanics point of view. Bio-fluid mechanics uses the general principles of fluid mechanics in dealing biological applications having fluid motion. The subject focuses on issues related to flow phenomenon of various fluid in human body. This subject also sees the applications in aerodynamics of insect flight, maneuvering and propulsion of various underwater creatures etc.In recent years, there is a surge in research on bio-fluid mechanics to have clear understanding of the various flow phenomena within the human body as well as the fluid mechanics applications in other animals.
This course aims at exposing the participants to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics that can be applied to any biological systems having fluid flow whether it is human body or any other living creatures. The course is also designed to provide the participants with the knowledge of computations and experiments for understanding the flow behavior in a biological system. The focus will be partially on clinical applications such as blood flow through arteries and heart, ocular fluid dynamics, and emptying of stomach and the remaining course will be devoted to applications of fluid mechanics in insect flight aerodynamics for possible application in micro-air vehicle and related areas, maneuvering and propulsion of birds and underwater creatures.Other than the dissemination of knowledge, the course also aims to highlight the importance and excitement of experimental and
computational research on this topic by providing the participants glimpses of experimental and numerical facilities at IITK Kanpur. There will be practical sessions on the use of commercial fluid mechanics
software in which the participants will be shown demonstration to solve a bio-fluid mechanical problem of using experiments as well as allowing them to perform some experiments.
Course Content
Introduction of biological processes involving fluid mechanics.
Review of fluid mechanics.
Cardiovascular fluid mechanics.
Numerical methods for biofluid mechanics.
Experiments for biofluid mechanics.
Blood rheology, microcirculation and cellular fluid mechanics.
Flow inside a stomach and ocular fluid dynamics.
Bio-locomotion

Short Term Course on Remote Sensing and GIS for Teachers of Colleges/Universities at IIT kharagpur
27.1.10
Indi Proff
What is this all about?
Introduction
In recent years, Remote Sensing and GIS techniques have emerged as one of the most versatile decision making tools in the geospatial domain with increasing applications in new areas. Integrated application of these two techniques culminates in harnessing the natural resources with incredible speed and reasonable accuracy, even from inaccessible areas, to help the process of planning the integrated development of a region. They are widely used in monitoring, management and planning in diverse fields of activities, such
as, sustainable development, infrastructure development, disaster management, environmental monitoring, resource inventory, rural and urban planning etc. Remotely Sensed data from Aerial photographs and Satellites, combined with GPS serve as the basic database in GIS for multi-criteria decision making in several applications, viz., groundwater and mineral exploration, land use / land cover, wasteland management,
inland water resources, mining, agriculture, forestry, coastal mapping and development, land records, health care, socio-economic, crime investigation etc., to name a few.
The main objective of this course is not only to expose the participants to the rapidly growing field of Remote Sensing and GIS but also to motivate them to take up research in this rapidly growing field of science and technology.
Course Content
• Concept of Remote Sensing, optical, thermal and microwave remote sensing, data acquisition, aircrafts and satellites, visual and digital remote sensing, analysis and interpretation of visual and digital remote sensing data, applications of remote sensing in geology, agriculture, forestry, urban and rural planning, land use / land
cover, groundwater, mineral and hydrocarbon.
• Basic GIS concepts, spatial data models, data structures, database creation and manipulation, map analysis, geostatistical analysis, 3D GIS, project planning,
• Basic concepts of GPS
