National Workshop on Molecular Simulation and Chemoinformatics at Karunya University
About Workshop
The clinical application of drugs in the treatment of diseases has been limited by severe toxic side effects during administration of the drugs. Thus it has been the objective of numerous studies to prepare better and safe drugs. Combined approach of computer simulations, and Chemoinformatics could be utilized for generation of effective drug agents (inhibitor) against disease (target). As a result of this, a large number of candidate drugs have been developed till now. These two methods provide the data set for development of computational models, for virtual screening and prediction of biological activity of the new drug to be developed in the near future. These computational models also reduce the number of candidate molecules that needs to synthesized and tested, reducing both cost and time in the process of drug development. Also the above said technique will provide a unique platform to all the researchers working in this field to screen new molecules which are synthesized.
The main problem of any drug and other agents, which substantially reduces their therapeutic usefulness, lies in their scant selectivity because these substances affect diseased and normal cells alike and lead to the appearance of adverse side effects. This could be elucidated by exploring the mechanism and mode of action of these agents with the receptor to calculate the probabilities of their existence, leading to deciphering their interaction, mechanism and activity which are very essential for the development of better and
safe drugs.
This workshop intends to provide an arena for students and researchers in discussing the following topics as well as to provide hands on training in the following key areas for new drug development.

About Workshop and Details
The workshop advisory committee invites applications from promising Junior Faculty for attendance at the “Advanced Technologies and Research Proposal Development” workshop. This workshop, to take place on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in New Delhi, will entail five days of activities including bioinformatics training, research proposal/project development, round-table discussions on research ethics and laboratory management, and lectures on current research and technologies by GID consortium faculty from Seattle and Delhi. Attendees will also present their recent findings in poster sessions.
Approximately 20 participants will be selected to attend the meeting based on a submitted abstract and curriculum vita. There is no registration fee for the selected candidates, the workshop will support the cost of travel by economy air within India, board, and shared lodging. Each participant will be requested to bring a draft of a project or proposal to the workshop (details to follow).

The workshop is aimed towards enhancing knowledge in selected areas of modern biology and to help the participants in developing independent research aptitudes. The workshop would include an in-depth review of current status of various facets of modern biology and ‘interaction based training’ on developing research projects including writing grant applications. The workshop will be held from 13–16 December 2010 under the auspices of ‘UGC Networking Resource Centre’ at the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Eligibility: Ph.D. in any area of biological sciences or allied subjects with teaching/research experience not exceeding 10 years for college teachers and 5 years for university teachers.
The application including curriculum vitae sent through proper channel should reach the office of The Dean, SLS, JNU, New Delhi 110 067 . Twenty participants will be selected with due consideration for nationwide regional representations. Also, preference will be given to teachers currently working in under privileged states/ regions. AC II tier train fare will be paid to the participants upon completion of the workshop while stay, etc. will be arranged by the organizers.

UGC-Networking Resource Centre Second 2010 Teacher/Researcher Training Workshop in Biological Sciences at Indian Institute of Science
Applications from teachers and researchers belonging to universities, colleges and affiliated institutions are invited to the Second 2010 Workshop in Biological Sciences being held during 22–29 November 2010 at the Indian Institute of Science.
The workshop covers theory classes in basic and contemporary topics in various areas of biological sciences and hands-on training on various techniques in protein purification. Applicants should send their brief data including a paragraph on the current research they are involved in as well as a list of publications, if any to the Coordinator of the UGC Networking Centre. Since the number of vacancies is limited, preference will be given to those who have completed their M.Sc. degree and are currently engaged in teaching and research and are already or will be employed by their universities. Boarding and lodging will be arranged by the institute for the duration of the workshop. Travel expenses by train will be reimbursed according to institute guidelines.

The programme is designed to equip participants with a vide knowledge of plant diversity and its investigation, and a practical insight into various techniques used in plant taxonomy including chemotaxonomy and molecular approaches through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on training. A maximum of 25 candidates will be selected. Candidates selected for attending the course will be provided traveling allowance (as admissible for in service candidates and sleeper class train fare from the nearest point to research scholars) and free boarding and lodging facilities for the entire duration of the workshop by the organizers. The course will cover all important topics in chemistry, e.g. thermodynamics, electrochemistry, surface
chemistry, green chemistry, nanochemistry, photochemistry, spectroscopy, quantum chemistry,
chemical kinetics and catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, polymer and colloid
chemistry, coordination chemistry, organic reaction mechanism, synthetic organic chemistry with

Human impact leading to ecosystem destruction necessitates the development of restoration strategies. Looking at the great number of various parameters determining a plant community, the inclusion of soil microorganisms in restoration practices is indispensable. Future research on symbiosis is desperately needed for enlightening the AMF biology and PGPRs and elucidating the precise relationship between plant species and their soil environment for successful re-establishment in a new environment or in a destroyed/fragile ecosystem under restoration.
This three day workshop will not only provide the forum to discuss the biology of microorganisms and its role in the ecological sustenance but will also help in determining an effective strategy for restoration of destroyed/fragile ecosystem and re-establishment of plant species, thereby minimizing the global warming impact. This workshop includes an insight to open source tools and techniques used for the analysis purposes according to the user’s need.
Structural Biology and Bioinformatics
This workshop is intended to be an overall introduction of bioinformatics approaches and computational methodologies commonly used in structural biology and molecular design. The Discovery Studio software will be used to demonstrate during the hands on sessions.
This workshop is mainly intended for the people from MBBS, M.Pharma, M.Sc. (Life sciences), M.Tech. (Life sciences) or B.Tech. (Life sciences) and other scientific staffs who either work in genomics and proteomics or are interested in understanding how to incorporate such data into their research.
Participation is free but participants will be allowed to attend only one workshop. So they are requested to apply for any one of the workshops mentioned above. If any participants send application for both the workshops, one application will be chosen for consideration and the other will be rejected.

What is this all about?
Theme
Heat exchangers are becoming increasingly compact, miniaturized and efficient. Several terms such as enhanced, compact, ultra-compact, microscale and mesoscale are used to classify heat exchangers that promise high heat transfer coefficients, smaller size and weight, reduced structural requirements, increased mobility and greater efficiency to achieve significant cost savings. Small scale heat exchangers typically employ large number of small flow passages using a variety of mass produced enhanced surfaces with different materials of construction and configurations, suited to a variety of non-fouling or low fouling fluids. Special polymers, composites, ceramics, glass, Teflon and other non metallic materials have also been used to suit the manufacturing techniques and to ensure safety and reliability even in harsh climates. The range of applications include process, automotive, aerospace, electronics, HVAC, power, food and chemical industries etc. Continuing innovations in frontier areas such as nanotechnology, fuel cells promise further developments in heat exchanger miniaturization.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques are extensively employed to design the flow passages and headers to ensure uniform flow distribution and to minimize pressure drops.
The workshop aims to bring internationally acclaimed experts in the field, both from industry and academia and to provide a forum for closer interaction. The workshop will focus on the recent advances in modeling, design, fabrication, application and development of small scale heat exchangers. The prospects and challenges in these areas will also be presented.

Heat exchangers are becoming increasingly compact, miniaturized and efficient. Several terms such as enhanced, compact, ultra-compact, microscale and mesoscale are used to classify heat exchangers that promise high heat transfer coefficients, smaller size and weight, reduced structural requirements, increased mobility and greater efficiency to achieve significant cost savings. Small scale heat exchangers typically employ large number of small flow passages using a variety of mass produced enhanced surfaces with different materials of construction and configurations, suited to a variety of non-fouling or low fouling fluids. Special polymers, composites, ceramics, glass, Teflon and other non metallic materials have also been used to suit the manufacturing techniques and to ensure safety and reliability even in harsh climates. The range of applications include process, automotive, aerospace, electronics, HVAC, power, food and chemical industries etc. Continuing innovations in frontier areas such as nanotechnology, fuel cells promise further developments in heat exchanger miniaturization.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques are extensively employed to design the flow passages and headers to ensure uniform flow distribution and to minimize pressure drops.
The workshop aims to bring internationally acclaimed experts in the field, both from industry and academia and to provide a forum for closer interaction. The workshop will focus on the recent advances in modeling, design, fabrication, application and development of small scale heat exchangers. The prospects and challenges in these areas will also be presented.
