The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) announced the winners of the Infosys Prize 2010 today at a press conference in Bangalore.First let us have a brief intro on ISF and Infosys Prize.
About Infosys Science Foundation and Infosys Prize
The Infosys Science Foundation is a not-for-profit trust which was set up in February 2009 by the management of Infosys. The Foundation announced Infosys Prize, an annual award, to honor outstanding achievements of researchers and scientists across five categories:
Engineering and Computer Science,
Mathematical Sciences,
Life Sciences,
Physical Sciences
and Social Sciences (Social Anthropology and Sociology).
A jury, comprising eminent leaders in each of these fields, evaluates the achievements of the nominees against the standards of international research, placing the winners on par with the finest researchers in the world.
The winners will receive a prize of INR 50 Lakh, along with a pure gold medallion and a citation certificate.
This year the winners in the respective categories are:

NASI invites nominations for the above awards for the year 2010. The nominee should be an Indian citizen/Overseas citizen of India working in India and below the age of 35 years as on 15 April 2010. The award has been instituted by the NASI to recognize promise, creativity and excellence in young scientists. The award shall be made in recognition of notable contributions made by him/her in any branch of S&T recognized by the NASI on the basis of work carried out in India.
Number and value of Awards: The number of awards to be made in any year will be limited to five. Each
award carries a Citation, Bronze Medal and Rs 25,000 in cash.
Nominators and last date: A candidate may be proposed by a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Scientific Society of national standing, university faculty, post-graduate department or research institutions may also make nominations of eligible candidates.
A candidate may only be nominated once. However, a nomination will remain valid for consideration for 3 years or the age eligibility whichever expires earlier. The nomination shall be made in the prescribed format. 20 copies of nomination form (hard copy + CD) complete in all respects along with 20 copies of reprints of five most important publications and all supporting documents, must reach the Academy latest by 15 April 2010.

Nominations are invited for the year 2009
1. Preamble
a) The Award is named after Prof. G N Ramachandran and will be known as the “Prof. G N Ramachandran Gold Medal for Excellence in Biological Sciences & Technology”.
b) The Award is given each year for outstanding contributions to Biological Sciences & Technology.
2. Nature of Award
A Gold Medal and a citation are to be presented at the annual meeting of Indian Science Congress. Medal is awarded for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in the inter-disciplinary subject / field of Biological Sciences and Technology.
3. Purpose
Recognition of outstanding work in Biological Sciences & Technology.
4. Eligibility
a) Any citizen of India engaged in research in Biological Sciences & Technology.
b) The Award shall be bestowed on a person, who in the opinion of Advisory Committee constituted by CSIR, has made conspicuously important and excellent contributions to human knowledge and progress, fundamental or applied in the particular field of endeavor, which is his / her specialization.
c) The award would be given on the basis of contributions made through work done primarily in India during the ten years, preceding the year of prize (For this purpose “primarily” will mean “for the most part”).
5. Award
The Award shall be given every year with the approval of the Governing Body of CSIR on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee.
6. Advisory Committee
a) The Advisory Committee for each year’s award would be constituted by DG, CSIR. The Committee would consist of a maximum of seven experts in broad areas.
b) On receipt of the nominations for a particular year, CSIR would circulate the list of nominees along with the detailed statement of work and attainments of each candidate to all members of Advisory Committee.
c) Meeting of the Committee would be convened by CSIR, in consultation with the Chairperson for selecting the recipient of the “G N Ramachandran Award” and the recommendations of the Committee would be submitted to DG, CSIR for approval.
d) The composition of Advisory Committee, the information submitted for their scrutiny, the proceedings of the meeting and the procedure for consideration of the nominations, other than as detailed herein would be kept confidential.
7. Nominations
a) Name of candidates may be proposed by a member of the Governing Body (CSIR); Presidents of approved scientific societies and academies of all-India character, Vice-Chancellors of Universities; Deemed Universities and Institutions of national importance; Directors of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Director-General of the major R & D organizations, such as the Defence Research & Development Organisation, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Indian Council of Medical Research, Directors of CSIR Laboratories, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Secretaries of the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Department of Biotechnology, etc. Member in-charge (Science) in the Planning Commission. University Faculties can recommend scientists working in their institutions only and route nominations through their respective Vice-Chancellors, while the faculties in IITs are required to send their nominations through their Directors. Directors-General of the R & D Organisations and Chairmen of Commissions may sponsor names of the scientists working in their respective organizations. The Directors of CSIR laboratories can nominate candidates in disciplines of their interest irrespective of the fact whether they are working in CSIR laboratories or outside. Nominations from other individuals sponsoring their own names or of other are not acceptable. Each nomination should be accompanied by a detailed statements of work and attainments of the nominee and a critical assessment report (not more than 500 words) bringing out the importance of significant research and development contributions of the nominee made during the ten years preceding the year of the Prize.
b) A candidate, once nominated, would be considered for a total period of three years, if otherwise eligible. Once such a nomination has been received, CSIR can correspond directly with the candidate for supplementary information, if necessary.

a) The Award will be presented during the inaugural session of Indian Science Congress.

What is this all about?
Applications are invited for the ‘Young Researcher Award – 2010’
This Scheme is instituted by the Lady Tata Memorial Trust (LTMT) to annually recognize and reward young Indian scientists with outstanding track record in biological sciences, with a deep commitment to find innovative solutions to major problems related to human diseases and potential for high quality research. Applicant should have publications in well recognized peer reviewed journals of repute and contributed to knowledge generation that has created significant impact in the field of translational possibilities.
Scope
All areas of Life Sciences and Biotechnology related to human diseases will be covered by this Award.
Who Can Apply?
(i) The Award is open to Indian Nationals who are below the age of 40 years, and who have
displayed a potential for high quality research.
(ii) The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in any Biological Science or a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences, or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology related areas. The applicant must have at least 4 years professional experience in the specific area after obtaining the above degree.
(iii) The applicant must have a regular position in an Indian University/Organization/Institute and
should be engaged in research and development. The awardee will be eligible for regular
research grants through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the
Government of India. Applicants currently working abroad may apply provided that they have
confirmed placement in an Institute in India.
Award Details
The amount of the Award will be Rs 10,000 per month in addition to regular salary from the host
institute. In addition, the awardee will receive a contingency grant of Rs 5.00 lakhs per annum for
meeting the expenses on consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel,
manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of
research project under the Award.

Applicant should have publications in well recognized peer reviewed journals of repute and contributed to knowledge generation that has created significant impact in the field of translational possibilities.
Scope
All areas of Life Sciences and Biotechnology related to human diseases will be covered by this Award.
Who Can Apply?
(i) The Award is open to Indian Nationals who are below the age of 40 years, and who have
displayed a potential for high quality research.
(ii) The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in any Biological Science or a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences, or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology related areas. The applicant must have at least 4 years professional experience in the specific area after obtaining the above degree.
(iii) The applicant must have a regular position in an Indian University/Organization/Institute and
should be engaged in research and development. The awardee will be eligible for regular
research grants through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the
Government of India. Applicants currently working abroad may apply provided that they have
confirmed placement in an Institute in India.
Award Details
The amount of the Award will be Rs 10,000 per month in addition to regular salary from the host
institute. In addition, the awardee will receive a contingency grant of Rs 5.00 lakhs per annum for
meeting the expenses on consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel,
manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of
research project under the Award.
