CSIR SPM Fellowship 2010 | JRF Recruitment at CIMAP Lucknow
CSIR SPM Fellowship - 2010 selections will be held from 24 July 2010 to 27 July 2010 at Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow
The fellowship aims to nurture the budding scientific talent and to nourish the objective of pursuit of scientific research by pursuing Pd.D programme with a special focus in CSIR Labs/other specialized R & D institutions/universities. A stipend of Rs.15000/- + HRA per month is given during the first two years of the fellowship and a contingency grant of Rs.70000/- p.a. May be raised to Rs.18000/- + HRA per month from third year onwards on the basis of review/satisfactory progress. The candidate may be reverted to JRF (NET), if performance is not found satisfactory. The fellowship is granted initially for 2 years, which is extendable as per normal rules for CSIR JRF (NET) Programmes; maximum up to 5 years.
Around top 50 candidates in Life Sciences and Chemical Sciences and top 25 each in Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences & Earth Sciences (including candidates from reserved categories as per norms of NET) from each of the two NET examinations conducted in a calendar year. Certain top ranking GATE qualified candidates in the subject areas of NET also called for interview.
The eligible candidates are called for an interview by a specially constituted panel of subject-experts for initial screening. The shortlisted candidates after first interview will be further interviewed by a panel of SPMF Core Committee members and subject- committee chairmen for making final recommendations. The process is likely to be completed by end of July every year.

Over the years the development of these tools has become increasingly sophisticated to make their use simpler and now these have become as indispensable tool for R & D work. To keep pace with the sophistication in these tools, it is necessary to simultaneously upgrade the skills of all the concerns in this field as a human resource development venture. In recent years, the field of biotechnology has appeared as the expression of wonderful applications of various techniques of molecular biology. Today there is hardly any application area involving biological systems, which doesn't depend on these techniques and concepts. It is logical to anticipate that future decade in this century will witness the major scientific advancements through the application of these cellular, genetics and molecular tools and skills. Towards maintaining the pace with the new developments and achieving a cutting edge in biotechnological applications globally, it is necessary to inculcate these skills and expertise through systematic training of human resource by exposing young scholars to modern tools and sophisticated techniques of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is the real multidisciplinary science where technologies from different fields interact. In a strict sense bioinformatics is the study of how information is represented and transmitted in biological systems. Times have changed in the years since the human genome was identified. Now any biological research becomess worthful research after applying bioinformatics in it. And that is what exactly this training planned for graduate scholars (CST-2010) aims at. The course is running successfully
in its seventh year since 2003.
About CIMAP
Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) is a unique and highly important CSIR laboratory involved in plant research for the production of and value addition to the medicinal and aromatic materials for meeting the demands of Indian industry and for foreign exchange earning by exports. The institute has state-of-art laboratories for plant tissue culture, DNA fingerprinting, transgenic development and gene and biomolecule prospection and bioinformatics. Lucknow, the ‘City of Nawabs’ is today more of a ‘Science City’ of North India for its possession of academic and scientific resourcefulness by the visible presence of organizations like CDRI, NBRI, IITR, IISR, CISH, NBFGR, IET, KGMU, SGPGI and many others including Lucknow University. Lucknow has warm weather during June – July with maximum and minimum temperature range of 35° and 20°C.

, bioinformatics and plant tissue culture techniques would provide exposition to the following main areas:
The “CIMAP Summer Training on Techniques and Tools of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (CST-2010)” which is now in its fifth year has been specifically planned in view of requests from a large number of students across the country to provide the institutional training as a requirement of their curriculum of B.Tech, M.Sc (Biotech.) and M.Tech courses. The participation in the training is limited to a manageable number of 24 trainees so as to facilitate direct hands on exposition to all participants and thus would be selection based, attempting maximum geographic coverage.

- DNA/RNA techniques – Basic techniques of DNA/RNA, protein handling towards genomics and proteomics.
- Molecular Biology Tools and Methods – Recent molecular biology tools & techniques including gene cloning, sequencing and analysis.
- Plant Tissue Culture Techniques – Basic concepts of morphogenesis, synseed technology, protoplast culture & fusion, Agrobacterium – mediated genetic transformation, bio-reactor scaling-up of cell/hairy roots cultures, in vitro secondary metabolism and metabolic engineering.
- Bioinformatics Tools and Applications. – Biological database and their annotations, Pairwise and multiple sequence alignment, Genome and proteome analysis, Data Mining, Phylogenetic analysis, Gene and Protein structure prediction, drug discovery.

- Candidates who have completed or will be completing M.Sc. in life sciences (Agriculture/ Botany/ Chemistry / Biotechnology/ Bioscience/ Biochemistry/ Molecular Biology/ Bioinformatics) with minimum 55 % marks and have cleared CSIR UGC NET Exam/ ICMR NET Exam / DBT JRF Exam or any other Exam leading to JRF/ SRF fellowship tenable at CIMAP (as on 03rd August, 2010) are eligible for selection under the programme to carry out advanced research in the area of Biotechnology/ Genomics/ Plant Tissue Culture/ Bioinformatics/ Plant Physiology/ Metabolomics/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Botany and Pharmacogonosy/ Natural Product/ Synthetic/ Analytical/ Process Chemistry/ Agronomy/ Soil Science/ Plant Nutrition/ Crop Improvement/ Crop Protection/ Agricultural Economics & Extension, etc.
- The selection will be made on the basis of interview only. The selected candidates will be enrolled for Ph.D Programme in academic affiliation with the Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi. Reservations are as per Government of India norms.
- The interview of short-listed candidates will be held on 02 and 03 August, 2010 and eligible candidate will be communicated about date and time of the interview by post. These students will have to complete Pre-Ph.D. courses in any one of the three sub-disciplines (Plant Sciences/Biotechnology and Bioinformatics/Chemical sciences) of their interest as the Core courses with optional courses, in two semesters spread over one year.
- On the successful completion of courses (OGPA 6.5/10 for general category and 6.0/10.0 for SC/ST/OBC) students will be eligible for registration as CIMAP-JNU Ph.D scholar under the supervision of CIMAP scientist available as guide to carry out research on a scientific topic covered under CIMAP’s mandate at CIMAP.
- A maximum of twenty four students may be admitted per academic year covering all the three sub disciplines mentioned above.
- Application should be typed on plain A-4 size paper in format given below. Application proforma can also be down loaded from our website.
- Completed application forms must be accompanied with a crossed Demand Draft for Rs.300/-(Rupees three hundred only) towards processing fee drawn in favour of Director, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow. A Demand Draft of Rs. 100/- (one hundred only) is acceptable from SC/ST/OBC candidate provided relevant documentary proof is attached with the application. The processing fee is not refundable.
- Application should be accompanied by attested copies of certificates and mark sheets from Senior Secondary level onward.
- Application along with Demand draft should be sent to” Director, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, PO CIMAP, Kukrail Picnic Spot Road, Lucknow-226015 so as to reach on or before 30 June, 2010.
- Incomplete applications and those received after the closing date will not be entertained. The decision of the institute will be final and binding and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
