This post was actually sheduled on "World Diabetes Day" on Nov 14th but couldnot post due to techical snag(ahem!!). ON to the better part this article is about knowing Diabetes disease and most possible preventive methods. Also knowing who all are susceptible to this Hereditary disease. So lets go for it!!!
Cause for Diabetes:
Let us understand about the cause for Diabetes Mellitus-
The food we intake is generally broken down from complex substances to simple matter. The simple matter constitute of glucose, fatty acids etc. This glucose is the main cause for Diabetes in any human. The glucose which is produced after digestion enter the blood stream to act as a fuel for the body and its cells.
Pancreas is an organ in the body which helps in production of insulin. The role of insulin is to remove glucose from the bloodstream and provide it to muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel.
The cause for high blood sugar in diabetic patient is due to
Inability of pancreas to make enough insulin or the cells like muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond to insulin normally.
Majorly there are three types diabetes
• Type 1 diabetes
• Type 2 diabetes
• Gestational diabetes
The most common all is type 2 diabetes which is most common in adults above 45 years but young people are increasingly being diagnosed with this disease. The pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body does not respond well to insulin. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not know they have it, although it is a serious condition.
Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common due to increasing obesity and failure to exercise.
There are many risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including:
• Age over 45 years
• A parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
• Gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
• Heart disease
• High blood cholesterol level
• Obesity
• Not getting enough exercise
• Polycystic ovary disease (in women)
• Previous impaired glucose tolerance
• Some ethnic groups (particularly African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic Americans)
Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood. Many patients are diagnosed when they are older than age 20. In this disease, the body makes little or no insulin. Daily injections of insulin are needed. The exact cause is unknown. Genetics, viruses, and autoimmune problems may play a role.
Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that develops at any time during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes. Women who have gestational diabetes are at high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.
Risk factors for gestational diabetes include:
• African or Hispanic ancestry
• Being older than 25 when pregnant
• Family history of diabetes
• Giving birth to a previous baby that weighed more than 9 pounds
• Obesity
• Recurrent infections
• Unexplained miscarriage or death of a newborn
Symptoms are....
• Blurry vision
• Excessive thirst
• Fatigue
• Frequent urination
• Hunger
• Weight loss
Enhancers of Diabetes:
• Stressful condition or strainful conditions shoots up the blood glucose levels
• Excessive insulin injections or intake may lead to hypoglycemia or reduced glucose levels which will lead to fatigue
Ways to fight Diabeties/preventive method
Though in many cases it is not preventive but few precautionary steps can lead to a healthy life:
• Regular exercise (an essential step for a healthy life)
• Controlled diet
• Eating at regular times or same time everyday
• Eating starchy/fibrous food

Sushruta- Greatest Indian Teacher/Surgeon who performed the first ever plastic surgery

India is a diverse culture and in this vastness of culture born many great personalities and scientists. From ancient India those great personalities made a critical mark on all the fields. Especially in the field of science, mathematics, philosophy etc..In science there are certain people in ancient India who were the first to perform or discover things in the entire world. This article is all about a great scientist/teacher “Sushruta” who was mainly responsible for clinical practices in ancient India.
Sushruta- Indian Teacher/Surgeon who performed the first ever plastic surgery
Sushruta was a famous surgeon in Kashi (Known now as Varanasi),who used to preach/practice medicine in acient India around 600b.c.The Ayurvedic(Ayurveda: science of life) guru Dhanwantari(father of Ayurveda) was his teacher.
During that period knowledge was imparted by the teacher to disciples orally in the then Vedic language “Sanskrit”. The most important compilation of his teachings and works are currently available in a treatise called “ Sushruta Samhita”.This discourse contains 184 chapter and description of 1120 illnesses,700 medicinal plants,64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources.
Father of surgery and plastic surgery
Sushruta is termed as the father of Surgery because of his inventive methods and principles used in those ancient times India. In the treatise”Sushruta Samhita” there are descriptions of his works on surgical practices. Susrutha is also the father of plastic surgery since his technique of forehead flap rhinoplasty (repairing the disfigured nose with a flap of skin from the forehead) is practiced almost unchanged in technique to this day. Many great personalities in medicine term him to be great innovator of ancient
On Diabetes
Sushruta described diabetes (madhumeha) as a disease characterised by passage of large amount of urine, sweet in taste, hence the name “madhumeha” — honey like urine. He goes on to say that diabetes primarily affects obese people who are sedentary and emphasized the role of physical activity in amelioration of diabetes. Such a pertinent observation speaks volume of his observational power, habit of going into the details of each symptom and a sharp analytical mind. His advice to resort to physical exercise to prevent diabetes holds true even today at a time when we are facing an epidemic of diabetes and coronary artery disease worldwide.
Other Important Works
Though the discovery of circulation is attributed to William Harvey; it is interesting to note that Sushruta had the knowledge of a structure like heart and its role in circulation of “vital fluids” through the ‘channels’. Besides these, he has also described the symptoms of “vatarakta” which are similar to that of hypertension. It is remarkable that Sushruta described these conditions some 150 years before Greek physician Hippocrates. He came to such a near perfect conclusion without resorting to any kind of biochemical or imaging procedures which were obviously non-existent at that point of time.
With all his keen observation and excellent analytical skill he made a very great impression in medical sciences.
Indi Proff salute this great rather greatest teacher/practitioner.
