VISITING FELLOWSHIPS: 2010–2011
To foster collaborations with the Centre’s faculty and to provide research opportunities, the Centre offers Visiting Fellowships to research scientists working in educational institutions and R and D laboratories in India.
Visiting fellows are associated with faculty and honorary faculty of the Centre, and the research work is carried out in the host institution in the broad areas of Life Sciences (including molecular and developmental biology, chronobiology, genetics, ecology, behaviour);Materials Sciences (including nanoscience); Chemical Sciences (including solid-state chemistry, theoretical/computational chemistry, and inorganic, physical and organic chemistry); Physical Sciences (including experimental and theoretical condensed-matter and materials physics, statistical physics, organic electronics and experimental nano biotechnology); Engineering Sciences (including fluid dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, and thermal and chemical engineering) and Atmospheric Sciences.
The fellowship is tenable for 3 months and the total period of stay in the Centre should be no less than 60 days. The fellowship carries an honorarium of Rs 25,000 per month.
The timing of the visit may be decided according to mutual convenience. Research scientists/engineers (preferably with a Ph.D.), who have permanent positions in educational institutions, R&D laboratories, etc. are invited to apply. Individuals who have utilized this Visiting Fellowship Programme earlier need not apply.
Application form may be downloaded from the website or obtained by writing to the Assistant Coordinator, JNCASR, Jakkur, Bangalore 560 064. The guidelines regarding the programme are also available in the above mentioned website. Awardees will be notified by 30 September 2010.

Swarnajayanti Fellowships 2009–10
Government of India had instituted a scheme ‘The Swarnajayanti Fellowships’ to commemorate India’s fiftieth year of Independence. Under this scheme a selected number of young scientists, with excellent track record, are provided special assistance and support to enable them to pursue research in frontier areas of science and technology. The fellowship is scientist specific and not institution specific, very selective and have close academic monitoring.
Nature of Support
The support will cover all the requirements for performing the research and will include a fellowship of
Rs 25,000 per month for five years. The fellowship will be provided in addition to the salary they draw from their parent institution. In addition to fellowship, grants for equipments, computational facilities, consumables, contingencies, national and international travel and other special requirements, if any, will be covered based on merit. Scientists selected for the award will be allowed to pursue unfettered research with a freedom and flexibility in terms of expenditure as approved in the research plan. The project should contain innovative research idea and it should have a potential of making impact on R and D in the discipline.
Duration
The duration of the fellowship will be for a period not exceeding five years.
Eligibility
The applicant should possess Ph.D. in Science/Engineering/Medicine. Scientists should be active in the frontier area of science and engineering with outstanding contributions (research publications, peer recognition, etc.) in his/her area of research. The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India or abroad. The scientists can choose to work at any S and T institution in India, however, he/she will have to submit a letter from Head of the institution at which they wish to pursue research, stating that administrative and basic infrastructural support to facilitate research will be provided. The institute should also undertake financial and other management responsibilities of the project throughout the five year term in case fellowship is awarded to the scientist. The fellowship is open to scientists between 30 and 40 years as on 31 December 2009.
Selection
The selection procedure will include consideration at various stages. An empowered committee will make the final selection based on the recommendation of expert committees. Scientists selected for the award should have accomplished innovative original research in frontier areas of science and technology.

The candidates may be required to submit further additional information as required and present the project idea before final selection. Scheme for Fellowship to Students of Academic Institutions for carrying Out live Consulting Assignments
Objective
To provide Fellowships to students for carrying out live projects/assignments relating to consultancy associating with CDC and other consultancy firms/agencies leading towards encouraging capacity building and professional development in the field of consulting and to support high quality innovative live consulting projects.
Eligibility Criteria
• Student with atleast 80% marks in 10+2.
• Students should be enrolled in engineering/management institutions accredited by AICTE/UGC
Scope
The live consulting projects would be both from engineering and management consulting, aiming towards helping the students in developing skills and competencies on consulting processes, tools, methods, diagnosis and documentation and presentation.
The evaluation process shall comprise
• Screening of the applications on the basis of the eligibility criteria.
• Evaluation of projects screened and shortlisted with respect to the following parameters.
1. Relevance to consulting
2. Approach and methodology proposed
3. Tools, processes to be used
4. Likely benefits

FELLOWSHIPS AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF BIOMEDICAL GENOMICS
What is this all About?
To promote the goals of the Institute and to facilitate re-entry of scientists of Indian origin working abroad.
Eligibility: Applicants for this Fellowship should possess Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent degree relevant to biomedical genomics, with an outstanding track record reflected in publications and other professional achievements. Applicants must not have affiliation to an institution in India. Awardees will carry out their scientific research in NIBMG or in other collaborating institutions.
Emoluments and Duration: Each awardee will receive a consolidated fellowship of Rs 75,000 per month and a contingency grant (not exceeding Rs. 500,000 per annum) linked to a project to be proposed by the applicant at the time of application. The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of five years. In case an awardee during the tenure of the fellowship finds a suitable job at any research institute/university, he or she will be permitted to relinquish the fellowship and take up the job.
Application Procedure: Each applicant should provide a Curriculum Vitae and the following:
(a) Summary of pre-doctoral training (with details of major courses taken and grades obtained) [about 10 sentences],
(b) Highlights of doctoral training and publications [about 20 sentences],
(c) Highlights of post-doctoral training and publications [about 30 sentences],
(d) Problems to be addressed in the next 5 years, with clear indication of the importance of the problems and methodologies to be adopted in solving them [about 3 pages],
(e) Description of long-term (5-15 years) professional goals [about 1 page], and
(f) A specific project proposal (with clear descriptions of objectives, methodologies, importance and timelines) to be carried out in the next 5 years, with budget and justification [6-10 pages].
