Post M.Sc. Junior Research Fellowship programme in Physics leading to PhD at Saha Institute of Nuclear Physcis
SAHA INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS, KOLKATA
An autonomous establishment under the aegis of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, conducting basic research in frontline areas of Physical and Biophysical Sciences.
Initially a part of the University of Calcutta, the Institute was accorded autonomy in 1951. Since then a Governing Body (Council from 1972), chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and having representatives from the University of Calcutta, the Union Government and the Government of West Bengal, was in the management until 1992 when this tripartite agreement came to an end. The Institute entered a contract with the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India by which SINP retains its autonomy with the administrative control now passing on to the DAE. It has the recognition of the University of Calcutta as a Centre for conducting research for doctoral degrees and providing facilities for teaching and research in Physical and Biological Sciences. The Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, India (and Secretary, DAE, Govt of India) chairs the governing council with members comprising three scientists nominated by the DAE, two representatives of the DAE, two nominees of CU, one nominee of Govt. of West Bengal and the Director of the Institute.
What is this all about?
Applications are invited for admission to the Post-M.Sc. Junior Research Fellowship programme in Physics of the Institute which will start in August.
The Post-M.Sc. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) programme in Physics constitutes the first year of the Ph.D. programme of the Institute. Any student striving for a Ph.D. in physics has to go through this programme.On successful completion of the Course a fellow can join the Ph.D. programme of the Institute.
Who Can Apply?
Physics and Mathematics at the Bachelor's level and Master's degree in Physics /Applied Mathematics /Electronics. Candidates currently in the final year of their Master's degree may also apply.
Area of Research
The Institute conducts both theoretical and experimental research in frontier areas of physics. The areas of research include: Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Microelectronics, Nuclear & Atomic Physics, Plasma Physics, Surface Physics, Theoretical Physics.

Fellowship and perquisites
Those admitted into the Course are designated as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) of the Institute and are entitled to stipends of Rs 12,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs 14,000/- per month thereafter. Medical reimbursement for self only as per CS(MA) Rules are also given. House Rent Allowance (HRA) at 30% of fellowship extra if he/she is not provided hostel accommodation. An annual book grant of Rs. 3000/- is also available after the first year. Any student may enjoy external sources of fellowships (CSIR, UGC), in which case the amount of fellowship and other benefits depend upon the funding agency.
