A Refresher Course on ‘Modern biotechnological techniques’ for graduate and postgraduate
college/university teachers, will be held at Manipal Life Sciences Centre, Manipal University, Manipal for a period of two weeks from 10 to 22 January 2011.

The objective of this short-term Refresher Course is to give the participants a hands-on training on some modern biotechnological techniques and the theory behind them. A variety of teaching methods like lectures, discussion and laboratory work shall facilitate the learning process. The course will help the participants to gain and sharpen their skills on biotechnology. This training provides them necessary knowledge to boost their confidence in handling modern instruments used in the field of life sciences and modern biotechnology. The skills gained during this workshop will effectively fulfill their role as better researchers and teachers in teaching undergraduate/ postgraduate students. The course will consist of a lecture everyday and over 6 hours of practical/demonstration/hands-on training.
Teachers who wish to participate in the Refresher Course may send their application on plain paper with following details: name, age, date of birth, sex, e-mail, official and residential address, telephone and mobile numbers, academic qualifications starting from B.Sc. onwards, teaching experience, course taught, position held and a statement indicating their reason for interest in participating in the course and their expectations from the course. (Please do not send your entire bio-data.) Twenty five selected teachers will be provided local hospitality and round trip actual of bus fare/train fare (3 tier AC) by shortest route.

National Science Academies IAS/NASI/INSA Summer Research Fellowship Programme for Students and Teachers 2011
National Science Academies’ Summer Research Fellowship Programme for Students and Teachers – 2011
The three national Science Academies offer several two-month Summer Fellowships to enable students/teachers to work with scientists associated with the three Academies during 2011. The announcement inviting applications along with the application format and a list of guides willing to accept students/teachers for work on joint short-term projects are included as a supplement in the October 2010 issue of RESONANCE — journal of science education. This information is also available in the websites of the three Academies.
Applications are invited from interested students and teachers from all universities and colleges
affiliated to UGC/AICTE/MCI/Accredited Institutions of State Universities for these Fellowships. The
application should include:
(a) a brief resume of the applicant (in the prescribed format);
(b) a write-up (in about 250 words) as to what the applicant wants to learn and achieve;
(c) the guide with whom the applicant would like to work.
Student applicants should include a recommendation letter from a teacher (in the prescribed format) familiar with their work, in a sealed envelope. The selected candidate may work in consultation with the assigned guide for two months any time during the calendar year, preferably during the summer. Applications should be submitted online through one of the below websites ;however a copy of the application together with enclosures must be sent by speed post to The Coordinator, Science Education Programme, Indian Academy of Sciences, C.V. Raman Avenue, Near Mekhri Circle, Sadashivanagar, Bangalore 560 080.
The registration number assigned soon after online submission must be quoted both in the hard copy
of the application to be sent and in the letter of recommendation to be forwarded by the teacher in the case of student applicants.
Information of selection along with concurrence of the guide will be despatched by early March 2011.
The selected students/teachers will be provided appropriate round trip train fare and a monthly fellowship to meet their living expenses at the place of work.

A Refresher Course on ‘Recent Advances in Chemical Science and its TechnologicalApplications’ for College/University teachers is being held at the Department of Chemistry, SikkimManipal Institute of Technology, Majitar, Rangpo, Sikkim (East) 737 132 from 8–21 December 2010.
The course will cover all important topics in chemistry, e.g. thermodynamics, electrochemistry, surface
chemistry, green chemistry, nanochemistry, photochemistry, spectroscopy, quantum chemistry,
chemical kinetics and catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, polymer and colloid
chemistry, coordination chemistry, organic reaction mechanism, synthetic organic chemistry with
special emphasis on medicinal chemistry, symmetry, group theory and applications.
The lectures will be followed by problem solving, sessions and home assignments. Professor Mihir
Kanti Chaudhuri (Vice-Chancellor, Tezpur University) is the Course Director and Professor Amlan
Kumar Das and Dr Nayan Kamal Bhattacharyya (Department of Chemistry, Sikkim Manipal Institute of
Technology) are the Course Coordinators.

NASI-YOUNG SCIENTIST PLATINUM JUBILEE AWARDS FOR THE YEAR 2010
NASI invites nominations for the above awards for the year 2010. The nominee should be an Indian citizen/Overseas citizen of India working in India and below the age of 35 years as on 15 April 2010. The award has been instituted by the NASI to recognize promise, creativity and excellence in young scientists. The award shall be made in recognition of notable contributions made by him/her in any branch of S&T recognized by the NASI on the basis of work carried out in India.
Number and value of Awards: The number of awards to be made in any year will be limited to five. Each
award carries a Citation, Bronze Medal and Rs 25,000 in cash.
Nominators and last date: A candidate may be proposed by a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Scientific Society of national standing, university faculty, post-graduate department or research institutions may also make nominations of eligible candidates.
A candidate may only be nominated once. However, a nomination will remain valid for consideration for 3 years or the age eligibility whichever expires earlier. The nomination shall be made in the prescribed format. 20 copies of nomination form (hard copy + CD) complete in all respects along with 20 copies of reprints of five most important publications and all supporting documents, must reach the Academy latest by 15 April 2010.
Selection of the Awardees: As per regulations of NASI.
