National Institute of Virology | NIV Pune PhD Admission 2011
Application for Ph.D. Programme-2011
(UNDER JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW PROGRAMME)
The National Institute of Virology invites applications from candidates who are bonafide Indian citizens and having consistently good academic record. Candidates should have strong motivation to pursue research in modern biology leading to a Ph.D. degree. The list of available projects for the current session will be provided to the
candidates at the time of interview.
Candidates who satisfy the following criteria only need apply:
1. Should have an M.Sc. degree in any area of Life Sciences.
2. Qualified in the PET/GATE/CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT examination for Junior Research Fellowship. The fellowship should be valid on the date of joining.
3. Other terms and conditions of the fellowship will be as directed by the agency awarding the fellowship. Age relaxation will be 5 years in case of SC/ST/Women/PH and 3 years in case of OBC candidates.
4. Those who have already availed fellowship in other organizations and seeking transfer should clearly indicate so on their application.
5. Reservation will be as per the government of India guidelines.

Application for Ph.D Programme-2010
(UNDER JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW PROGRAMME)
National Institute of Virology is a premiere institute under the Indian Council of Medical Research. The main focus of the research is on viruses of public health importance, i.e. Hepatitis, Respiratory, Enteric, Encephalitis, Hemorrhagic and Emerging group of viruses. The area of research encompasses basic virology, molecular aspects, epidemiology, vaccinology, antivirals, pathogenesis and bioinformatics.
Applications are invited for Ph.D Programme in different areas of virology.
Total Number of seats: - 22 Vacancies (UR-05, OBC - 07, SC - 06, ST - 04, Out of these, two seats are reserved for PH candidates).
Minimum Qualifications:
A. Master Degree in Life Sciences/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Biophysics/Virology/
Veterinary science/other branches of Life Sciences/Biological Sciences and from any recognized University/ Institution recognized by Pune University.
B. First division or equivalent grade or at least 60% marks or equivalent grade point in all major
examinations from Higher Secondary (10+2) onward.
C. Qualifying in one of the following Tests (with validity as on 1st of August 2010) is mandatory for the
candidates applying for Ph.D. CSIR-UGC NET for JRF or UGC-NET for JRF or DBT- JRF or ICMR
JRF or any other qualifying examination approved by University of Pune.
D. Candidates who have not yet cleared their qualifying examinations and expect to complete all the requirements for the degree (including all examinations, project dissertation, viva-voce JRF etc.) before July 31, 2010, are also eligible to apply.
E. The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxable to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.
Age limit: 28 years as on 01/07/2010. Age relaxation as per statutory norms shall be applicable for SC/ST/OBC/PH and women candidates.

D. Candidates who have not yet cleared their qualifying examinations and expect to complete all the requirements for the degree (including all examinations, project dissertation, viva-voce JRF etc.) before July 31, 2010, are also eligible to apply.
E. The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxable to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.
Age limit: 28 years as on 01/07/2010. Age relaxation as per statutory norms shall be applicable for SC/ST/OBC/PH and women candidates.

Know Our Research Institute - National Institute of Virology | NIV Pune
The National Institute of Virology is one of the major Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It was established at Pune, Maharashtra State in 1952 as Virus Research Centre (VRC) under the auspices of the ICMR and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), USA. It was an outcome of the global programme of the RF for investigating the Arthropod Borne viruses. Since the studies on arboviruses and their arthropod vectors involve most of the basic principles and techniques of general virology, entomology and zoology, these viruses were also considered to be an ideal group, to begin with, for intensive training and research in virology in our country. The RF withdrew its support in 1967 and since then the Institute is entirely funded by the ICMR

The research activities of the center were made more meaningful and self reliant by organizing new areas of research, such as Cell repository, Electron microscopy, Rickettsioses, Hepatitis, Influenza and related viruses, Clinical virology, Biochemistry, Virus registry, and Biostatistics. The research activities of the Institute are coordinated by a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) consisting of eminent scientists.
By the 70s the Institute had developed deep scientific roots, nurtured through the sustained efforts of many dedicated workers. With the expertise in virological training and research and emphasis on self-reliance, the centre was well prepared to undertake full responsibility as a National Institute. On the recommendation of the SAC, the VRC acquired its status of national importance and was renamed as National Institute of Virology (NIV) in 1978. Subsequently studies on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Rotavirus gastroenteritis, acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, Rabies, Herpes sirnplex, Buffalo pox, Measles, and Poliomyelitis were also initiated
A Microbial Containment Complex (MCC) having P-3 biosafety levels for handling microorganisms of highly infectious nature is being established at Pashan, 11 km off the main laboratory at Pune. This laboratory will provide National Containment facility for safe handling of highly hazardous pathogens.
The Institute was designated as one of the collaborating laboratories of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1967 and it started functioning as the regional centre of the WHO for South-East Asia for arbovirus studies from 1969. Since 1974, it has been functioning as a WHO collaborating centre for arbovirus reference and research. In 1995 it has been redesignated as the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research and Rapid Diagnosis of Viral Diseases. NIV is also the National Centre for Hepatitis and Influenza. The field unit of NIV at Bangalore is one of the centers under National Polio Surveillance Program conducting surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis cases from Kamataka as a part of Global Polio Eradication Prograrnme of the WHO South-East Asia region since 1997.
During the recent Swine Flu Epidemic two laboratories, National Institute of Virology, Pune and National Institute of Communicable diseases, New Delhi have been identified for diagnostic testing. NIV played a major role in testing the throat swab samples and creating awareness in and around Pune City which has been the epicenter for the Disease
