ICRISAT seeks applications for a Principal Scientist-Agronomy , to be based at its research center in Kano , Nigeria .
ICRISAT's Regional hub for West and Central Africa (WCA) is located in Niamey , Niger , with regional scientists also located in the research centers in Bamako , Mali , and Kano , Nigeria . ICRISAT's work covers approximately 20 countries in the Semi-Arid Tropics of WCA. In the region, ICRISAT is currently endowed with core competencies in the areas of agronomy, soil science, pearl millet, sorghum, and groundnut breeding, IPM, socio-economy and GIS.
To reduce poverty, enhance crop productivity and food security, and to protect the environment, ICRISAT research adopts an integrated genetic and natural resource management approach focusing on farming systems and crop improvement, management and utilization of sorghum, pearl millet, pigeonpea, chickpea, and groundnut in the semi-arid tropics, along with enabling policies and institutional mechanisms.
The Position:
The Principal Scientist-Agronomy/Systems Agronomist will be a member of the multi-disciplinary research team of ICRISAT and provide leadership in cropping systems research to support systems diversification and intensification efforts across the region. Crop-livestock integration, sustainable natural resource management and adaptation to, and mitigation of, risks associated with climate and other cause of variability are key issues, Responsibilities will include on-station and on-farm experimentation and the use of GIS/modeling for priority setting and domain targeting. This requires effective collaboration with a range of other disciplines, such as social and economic sciences, plant breeders as well as soil scientists. It involves collaboration with national agricultural research systems, regional agencies and other international organizations in the region in developing and implementing ICRISAT's research program.
The Job Includes :
Evaluation of existing and alternative methods for maintaining and enhancing sustainable farming systems, with a view towards crop-livestock integration. Participatory on-farm, and station experimentation focusing on options for intensification of cropping systems based on the dryland cereals sorghum and millet. Develop and improve concerted action for integrated genetic and natural resource management strategies for cereals farming systems with collaborators Identify and develop profitable ecosystem services based on cereals production systems. Management of complex data bases for capturing longer term changes in specific experimental sites. Play an active role in resource mobilization. Attract funding for new projects and create new collaboration for future research.
The Person will have:
PhD degree in Agronomy/Soil Science/Ecology.
Minimum 5-8 years of experience in natural resource management research, preferably with a strong community/participatory bias. Experience in geo-spatial analysis and systems modeling is desirable. Experience of ecosystems services or seed systems would be an advantage.
Research experience in an international organization
A record of achievement with academic publications and evidence of the development and management of research grants and capacity building initiatives.
Ability to manage multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural projects and develop collaboration with partners in the region
Fluency in spoken and written English is essential; knowledge of French will be an advantage.
