Minimum qualifications: M.Sc. in Physics / Chemistry / Life Science / Biotechnology / Genetics / Biochemistry / Microbiology / Bioinformatics / Medicinal Chemistry from recognized University / Institute with experience in research as demonstrated by the successful completion of a research project in a reputed Institute / Centre.
General Terms and Conditions:
For all the above posts candidates should not have completed the age of 35 years. Age limits shall be reckoned as on the closing date of receipt of applications. No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview.
Depending on the qualifications, experience and recommendations of the Selection Committee, the selected candidates may be placed in a scale and designation lower than the grade advertised/applied (in the same group)
All these positions are purely temporary and are initially for a period of one year. They could be extended/terminated depending on the continuation of the project(s).
Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/Physically Handicapped/Ex-service person applicants will be as per Govt. of India rules.

Proficiency in Computer skills (MS-Office, database search, bioinformatics). Communication skills in English (both written and oral). Should be a good team player and have experience working in multicultural team.

Essential qualification : Post Graduate degree (M.Sc. Agric. or M.Sc. or M.Tech.) in Biotechnology or M.Sc. Agric. in Genetics / Plant Breeding.
Desirable: Experience in the use of molecular markers in crop improvement and working knowledge of computer applications.
Emoluments: Rs. 14,000/- + 20% HRA per month as per rules.

M.Sc Genetics / M.Phil Biotechnology / PhD Program at Univeristy of Delhi
DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS
The Department of Genetics was established in 1984, as a part of the Faculty of Inter-disciplinary and Applied Sciences at the University of Delhi South Campus. In its brief period of existence the department has developed into an advanced centre of study in Genetics recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under their Special Assistance Programme (SAP-phaseII) and Department of Science and Technology under their FIST programme. Two of the faculties also have Centers of Excellence supported by Department of Biotechnology.
The department conducts a two year post-graduate programme in Genetics, a one year M.Phil. programme in Biotechnology and a Ph.D. programme. Through its interdisciplinary approaches involving interactions with different institutes and departments of the country, the department not only offers a unique opportunity to imbibe knowledge from experts in different fields but also helps maintain a high academic standard. Teaching in the department is also supported by research activities in frontline areas being pursued by the faculty of the department. M.Sc. students are encouraged to interact intensively with the faculty as well as research scholars of the department.
M.Sc. Programme – The Department offers a 2-year (based on four semesters) M.Sc. programme in Genetics. Students with Bachelor’s degree in any area of Life Sciences / physical sciences / chemical sciences / mathematical sciences / medical sciences / pharmacology / any branch of biology / paramedical sciences with at least 60% marks in their main subject (for Hons. stream) or in aggregate (for B.Sc general) or other equivalent undergraduate degree are selected through a national level entrance test. The course consists of core areas in Molecular Genetics (microbial, Drosophila, plants and humans) as well as related areas like Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Developmental Biology, Recombinant DNA Technology and Computer Applications. Apart from the core courses, students can select few courses of their choice from a bunch of elective courses. Some of the courses are offered by other departments. Class room seminars, discussions, written tests, project work and hands on practical training are integral components of the course. Students are continuously evaluated during the course. Various scholarships viz., Merit Scholarship, All India Post Graduate Scholarship and Monsanto Post Graduate Scholarship are also available for the M.Sc students. Students are encouraged to clear UGC/CSIR-NET while pursuing their M.Sc. course. Students passing M.Sc. Genetics and are registered for Ph.D in the Department can also apply for University Teaching Assistantship (conditions apply).
M.Phil (Biotechnology) Programme – The Department also offers an M. Phil programme in Biotechnology (one year duration), jointly with the Departments of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Microbiology. Candidates are selected through an open interview. This is a unique interdisciplinary programme jointly conducted by the four departments of the Faculty of Inter-disciplinary & Applied Sciences. M.Phil. students are required to take three courses followed by a dissertation in any one area.
Ph.D. Programme – Interdisciplinary research in the frontline areas of Microbial Genetics, Plant Genetics, Molecular Breeding and Biotechnology, Human Genetics, Drosophila Genetics, yeast Genetics, Plant-Microbe Interactions, RNAi technology, Developmental Genetics and Molecular Biology are carried out in the department. Students having fellowships instituted by the university and national and international agencies are registered provisionally under this programme. Students have to pass a course work (consisting of two courses) before confirmation of registration. The research facilities in the different laboratories are open to all the students. Six monthly periodical monitoring of work progress of Ph.D scholars would be followed and work record would be maintained per student basis. Research emanating from these projects is regularly published in journals of national and international repute.
Financial Support - Financial support to the department is mainly accorded by UGC. The 1
department has been recognized under UGC-SAP (2002-) and DST-FIST (2003) programmes. These two special grants have helped the Department to improve and strengthen the infrastructure facilities for both teaching and research. The Department has state of the art facilities that are open to all M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students. All the labs and offices are provided with adequate computer facilities and are connected through campus-wide networking. Besides the Institutional grants, the faculty also attracts funding from national and international agencies as well as industrial houses to augment the research activities. A large number of research staff, post-docs as well as research scientists work under various projects. Human genetic diversity in Asia has been mapped for the first time,important implications for the study of genetics and diseases
Human genetic diversity in Asia has been mapped for the first time by a group of over 90 scientists from the Human Genome Organisation’s (HUGO’s) Pan-Asian SNP Consortium. In the process it has not only mapped of genetic diversity in Asia but also traced the genetic origins of Asian populations. This was disclosed by the Union Minister of Science and Technology Shri. Prithviraj Chavan and Shri S.K. Brahmchari, DG, CSIR at a Press Conference today(11th Dec 2009). The findings were also published online in a report in the journal “Science” today.
The human genetic mapping of Asia has important implications, especially in the further understanding of migratory patterns in human history and for the study of genetics and diseases. The study conducted within and between the different populations in the Asia continent showed that genetic ancestry was highly correlated with ethnic and linguistic groups. There was a clear increase in genetic diversity from northern to southern latitudes. The study also suggested that there was one major inflow of human migration into Asia ensuing from Southeast Asia, rather than multiple inflows from both southern and northern routes as proposed before. This indicates that Southeast Asia was the major geographic source of East Asian and North Asian populations.
Prof. Edison Liu, Executive Director at the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) and the President of the HUGO, which initiated and coordinated this research has said that the study was a milestone not only in the science that emerged but the consortium that was formed. Prof. Partha Majumder, Prof. And head, Human Genetics Units, Indian Statistical Institute and Director, Centre for Population Genomics, Kolkata has said that this study marks a milestone of the collaboration among the geneticist from the ten Asian Countries and paves the road to a better understanding of our origin. We would like to extend this study not only in the direction of population genetics but also towards medical and health related issues.

What is this all about?
CCMB, a premier R&D Institute engaged in research in the areas of modern biology, is looking for a full-time Indian postdoctoral fellow with PhD in Genetics (preferably yeast) to work in the Laboratory of Prof. Olivier Gadal, Universite Paul-Sabatier, France, under an Indo-French Collaborative Project “Epigenetics of Transcription by RNA polymerase III” funded by IFCPAR.
Who Can Apply?
Candidates should have a recent PhD in genetics, with a profile that combines molecular biology experience and cell biology research. He/she will contribute to the analysis of gene positioning in yeast. Thus, practical and theoretical experiences in research with chromatin and transcription and interest for cutting-edge imaging techniques are highly welcome.
Area of Work/Project details
The Indo-French collaborative Project is funded by the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR) to study gene positioning using real-time imaging in living cells. Using a combination of cell biology and genetic approaches, structural players which contribute to spatial positioning of RNA polymerase III transcribed genes will be identified.
