"Understanding SCIENCE" - Summer camp for high school students
Science has become an important and permanent part of our daily lives. It not only gives us the platform to ask the "what, how and why" of nature but also has become an indispensible tool to ensure development of society and even sustenance of life. It is therefore of utmost importance to educate the people about all the recent developments in science and technology. IISER Bhopal, a premier educational Institute in the country, actively engaged in quality research and teaching believes in creating such an awareness. Aimed at students who have just cleared their class IX and XI examinations, IISER Bhopal invites applications from students interested in attending a short summer camp (16th – 21st May, 2011) at its premises. The summer camp will consist of interactive lectures, along with an exposure to laboratory work guided by IISER faculty members.
Our efforts are to make science as interesting and exciting as possible for the participants, so that they not only understand the basic principles of science, but also learn how to apply them in their daily lives. The objective of this program is to inculcate in students an aptitude to appreciate the role and contribution of science in the betterment of mankind. The program has been designed to create harmony between learning and applying scientific knowledge towards the development of the society.
Expenses,which include lodging and food, will be covered by IISER Bhopal for all the participants. A doctor will be made available on campus (24 hours)
to ensure personal health and wellbeing of all the candidates.

2. March 15, 2011: List of shortlisted candidates (will be uploaded on the website).
3. March 30, 2011: Last date for the payment of Registration Fee (for selected candidates). To facilitate homogeneous interaction between the students and faculty members, the seats are limited to 40. After
initial screening the selected candidates would have to pay a registration fee of Rs. 500/- only in the form of a demand draft in favour of "The Director, IISER Bhopal".
4. May 16, 2011: Reporting time at IISER Bhopal (Any candidate who comes to Bhopal on 15th night will be given accommodation).

IISER Pune Lecture Series at Your Institute | Interaction with the Faculty

One of the aims of IISER-Pune is to interact with other institutes and share the joy of doing science with students at all levels. With this aim in view, we are planning to organize one-day lecture series at various reputed institutes all over India. A typical one-day series would consist of three-four one hour talks by IISER-P faculties, along with lots of free time for the faculties to interact with the students (see below for details). This way, we aim to motivate young students in schools and colleges and also present latest research findings to Masters students planning to take up research as a career in India.
We propose to organize three types of lecture series:
Joy of Science Series
Aimed at students in Class XI, XII
These will be popular elementary talks by our faculties on exciting areas of science. The topics will be chosen in such a way that they are NOT part of the regular curriculum of the students
The aim is to make young students enthusiastic about science, and wherever possible, suggest them possible avenues for further reading, small projects etc
Science is Fun Series Aimed at students in I, II and III year BSc
These will be popular talks at a slightly advanced level than the Joy of Science series, on different areas of science. The topics will again be chosen in such a way that they are NOT part of the regular curriculum of the students
The aim is to make young students enthusiastic about science, and wherever possible, suggest them possible avenues for further reading, small projects etc
Scientific Research Series
Aimed at students in I and II year MSc
These will be popular talks, but at a slightly higher technical level. The topics would pertain to areas in which our faculties are engaged in active research
The aim is to make more mature students aware of the various avenues of research in modern science
The way we organize these talks is as follows:
The host institute/department indicates which series of talks it would like to host (Joy of science / Science is Fun / Scientific Research)
2. IISER-P finalizes a set of topics in consultation with the host institute/department
3. A date is fixed based on mutual convenience. Since ideally we would like maximum number of students to attend without any clashes with their existing class schedules, we would like these events to happen preferably on Saturdays. This is convenient for the speakers as well, since all our faculties are actively engaged in teaching, and are free on Saturdays. However, if it is absolutely impossible to organize the event on a Saturday, we can discuss with the host institute to come up with a mutually convenient date, if possible
We would rather like to talk to a group of genuinely interested and motivated students, than to a hall full of resentful ones!
All talks would be interactive, and we would encourage the students to ask as many questions as they wish to during as well as after the talks
There would be 3-4 one-hour talks with ample time for discussion between the talks. This will also ensure that there is enough buffer time between the talks, in case some of the talks stretch a little longer than an hour due to the interaction
IISER-P covers the travel cost of the faculties. We request the host institute to provide us with a lecture hall and other facilities like blackboards, LCD projectors etc. and organize tea/snacks for all participants. In case it is necessary for the faculties to stay overnight, we would request the host institute to take care of their boarding and lodging.

Conference on Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics

Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata

16 to 21 of December, 2010.
In the last seven decades, Quantum Theory has arguably been the single most fertile area of scientific enquiry which has generated a vast body of research in diverse areas of mathematics and physics. In mathematics, it has led to enormous developments in the fields of Analysis in Infinite-dimensional spaces, Operator Theory and Operator Algebras, Geometry and Probability, Harmonic Analysis and Number Theory, even Mathematical Logic, to name just a few. On the other hand all of modern physics is based on the fundamental ideas of quantum theory. Yet, in spite of its spectacular success and fertility, there are still conceptual and foundational issues which continue to challenge physicists and philosophers alike. These issues have become more relevant with the advent of Quantum Computing. In the proposed conference/workshop (to be held in the campus of the new institution IISER, Kolkata), a few theme lectures on some of these areas will be held. Of course, standalone talks on related topics are also going to be there. We envisage brain-storming exercises from practitioners in the field.
The meeting is open to participation by mathematicians and physicists interested in the foundations of Quantum Mechanics, but the logistical limitations demand that the total number be kept below 40, out of which 10 are expected to be from abroad. The participation by Ph.D. students and young post-docs will be particularly encouraged.
The conference will expose Indian researchers greatly to areas which are hitherto scantily pursued in India, for example, the mathematical theory of coherent states, quantization techniques, foundational questions related to the various quantum mechanical paradoxes, etc. This will increase the research activity in those areas among the few senior researchers who pursue such topics in India and will also attract students to get interested and take up such challenging areas for their research.

In the last seven decades, Quantum Theory has arguably been the single most fertile area of scientific enquiry which has generated a vast body of research in diverse areas of mathematics and physics. In mathematics, it has led to enormous developments in the fields of Analysis in Infinite-dimensional spaces, Operator Theory and Operator Algebras, Geometry and Probability, Harmonic Analysis and Number Theory, even Mathematical Logic, to name just a few. On the other hand all of modern physics is based on the fundamental ideas of quantum theory. Yet, in spite of its spectacular success and fertility, there are still conceptual and foundational issues which continue to challenge physicists and philosophers alike. These issues have become more relevant with the advent of Quantum Computing. In the proposed conference/workshop (to be held in the campus of the new institution IISER, Kolkata), a few theme lectures on some of these areas will be held. Of course, standalone talks on related topics are also going to be there. We envisage brain-storming exercises from practitioners in the field.
The meeting is open to participation by mathematicians and physicists interested in the foundations of Quantum Mechanics, but the logistical limitations demand that the total number be kept below 40, out of which 10 are expected to be from abroad. The participation by Ph.D. students and young post-docs will be particularly encouraged.
The conference will expose Indian researchers greatly to areas which are hitherto scantily pursued in India, for example, the mathematical theory of coherent states, quantization techniques, foundational questions related to the various quantum mechanical paradoxes, etc. This will increase the research activity in those areas among the few senior researchers who pursue such topics in India and will also attract students to get interested and take up such challenging areas for their research.

Selection Procedure
Only eligible candidates that meet the minimum educational qualifications and satisfy the additional criteria set by the departments will be called for an interview by the selection committee of the respective departments.
Candidates who are shortlisted by the selection committee will be informed the dates of the interview and details of the interview process by e-mail.
Based on their academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview, the departmental selection committee will recommend candidates to the Chairman for admission to the Ph. D. program.

#Candidates who are appearing for the final year of their qualifying degree examination in 2010 are also eligible to apply. However, they must submit attested copies of qualifying degree certificates/final transcripts on or before 30th September, 2010, failing which their admission will stand cancelled.
Candidates MUST have qualified the CSIR-NET/GATE/JEST/NBHM or equivalent examination valid for the current year in the relevant area of research. Candidates qualifying CSIR-Lectureship (NET) are NOT eligible.
Candidates who are in receipt of INSPIRE fellowship or eligible for INSPIRE fellowship for Ph.D. are also eligible to apply.
Applications of candidates who have not qualified exams or who do not meet minimum criteria as per the above table will NOT be entertained.
Students who have appeared or are appearing for final year exams and have qualified NET/GATE exams are also eligible to apply. Their admission to PhD is subject to successful completion of M.Sc. before 1 Aug 2010.
Candidates with valid UGC-CSIR JRF and DBT-JRF are eligible for fellowship directly from UGC or CSIR or DBT. Students selected for Ph. D. program based on GATE/JEST/NBHM scores, are eligible for financial aid (Assistantship/Scholarship) from IISER, Pune.
Selection Procedure
Only eligible candidates that meet the minimum educational qualifications and satisfy the additional criteria set by the departments will be called for an interview by the selection committee of the respective departments.
Candidates who are shortlisted by the selection committee will be informed the dates of the interview and details of the interview process by e-mail.
Based on their academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview, the departmental selection committee will recommend candidates to the Chairman for admission to the Ph. D. program.
E-mail will be the primary means of communication. All applicants should specify their e-mail ID clearly and legibly in their application forms.

Candidates intending to apply to more than one program/Department should use separate application forms for each program/ Department.
Fill the application form completely. Incomplete application forms will be rejected.
Attested copies of all supporting documents (mark sheets, certificates, age proof, caste certificate, etc.) are to be brought in at the time of the interview. DO NOT attach any supporting documents with your application.
Please DO NOT Send recommendations along with the application. Please carry one recommendation letter with you during the time of interviews or ask your referee to post it to the mailing address. For the Mathematics program, IISER will get in touch with your referees (as listed in your Math application form).

ADMISSION TO Ph.D. PROGRAMME
Applications are invited from highly motivated students for admission to the Ph.D. programme beginning in August 2010 at IISER-TVM.
Eligibility:
Masters degree in Physical/Chemical/Biological Sciences (including Veterinary and Agricultural sciences)/Mathematics/Statistics (minimum 60% marks or equivalent, relaxable by 5% for SC/ST candidates). Qualifying in one of the following tests with validity as on 1st of August 2010 :GATE/JEST/NBHM/CSIR-UGC-JRF/ICMR JRF/DBT JRF
Satisfying the eligibility criteria does not entitle the candidate to be shortlisted. Shortlisting is based on their academic performance including but not limited to performance in the national qualifying tests. The shortlisted candidates will be called for a test/interview.
Scholarship: JRFs of CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT etc. will draw fellowship and contingency according to the granting Institutions. The other qualified candidates will draw scholarship of Rs.12000/- p.m. from IISER-TVM.
Students registered for the Ph.D. Programme at IISER-TVM are required to take a minimum of four courses and clear the Comprehensive Examination to be eligible to continue with the research programme.
